My Computer System needs and questions are:

There are three main factors to consider when setting up your computer system, irrespective of what type of business you run.
  1. Having the right level of security protection
  2. Having expandable storage and backup capability
  3. Having the systems performance and functionality, that grows with your needs

Access and Security

Your Internet Connection

This typically comes as two boxes
  1. A 'modem' that plugs into the socket provided by your network or cable company. The modem is often provided by the company that provides the service.
  2. A 'router/firewall' combined with a 'wireless hub' that connects to your modem. You may need to buy this from your favorite office/computer store

Password and Network Protection

When setting up your firewall, router, and wireless hub
  1. Always set passwords on everything, using what are called Strong Passwords
  2. Set encryption on your wireless connections
  3. Contact A Taylor'd Design for help if you want to have staff, partners, or others to have remote access to your network

For all your computers make sure that you set both administrator and user passwords.

Storage and Backup

Central Server

A Business or Home Server provides you with a wide range of capabilities that can make your business more efficient.
  1. You can use the server to share files and data
  2. Having external, and possibly offsite, storage and backup for your critical business records
  3. Shared printing can reduce your costs per page, as we all provide you with faster printing

Other Server Features

Systems Performance and Features

Laptops, Desktops, Tablets

Have a common configuration for your laptops, desktops, and tablets
  1. Use brand name machines. They may be a little more expensive, but they will last longer
  2. If you travel consider getting a 'pay as you go' wireless card and data plan for your laptop
  3. Contact A Taylor'd Design for help with setting up automatic updates

Application Programs

Remember that your business applications are there to help you, not vice-versa
  1. Always buy licensed software, it just makes sense
  2. If you want to evaluate trial software, set up a dedicated machine that only runs trail software
  3. Contact A Taylor'd Design for help with integrating your office procedures and business applications
